Oedipus the King was originally written by Sophocles in 430 BC, and later on the subject was adapted by Seneca and Corneille. In the preface to Oedipus, a Tragedy, Dryden refers to these authors and comments on their works. By doing so, he reveals his concept of Oedipus, a Tragedy, and explains why he thinks that the Latin and French adaptions of the drama were inferior to the original work by Sophocles. Dryden disapproves of the way Corneille has treated the subject, but not the subplot – a love story involving Theseus and Dirce: in Oedipus, a Tragedy, Dryden himself uses a love story as subplot. According to Dryden, however, the French dramatist failed to create a heroic Oedipus. Instead of showing Oedipus as a just and merciful monarch, Corneille attaches only negative traits to Oedipus. The love story involving Theseus and Dirce gets too much attention and is put into the centre of his work.

E' davvero singolare che questo Edipo (scritto da John Dryden in collaborazione con Nathaniel Lee nel 1678), testo di sorprendente modernità e bellezza, sia rimasto fuori dal grande canone letterario, tanto da non avere avuto finora nessuna traduzione italiana. Una rivisitazione del mito che, a partire dai modelli illustri con cui apertamente compete (Sofocle innanzitutto, e poi Seneca e Corneille), trasforma radicalmente l’antico, per aggiunta e per sottrazione: mentre si attenuano i legami con gli antichi miti di fondazione e di vendetta, si amplifica e assume una centralità indiscussa il tema della passione di Edipo e Giocasta, inconsapevoli interpreti del tema dell’incesto che, con effetti di tragica ironia, serpeggia e si rifrange in ogni parte dell’azione drammatica. Sordi a oracoli e premonizioni, i due amanti modernamente tentano di farsi attori del proprio destino; mentre i personaggi tutti delle fonti acquistano voci nuove, inquiete e perturbanti, che si interrogano sulla propria identità, sulla liceità della passione trasgressiva, sulla violenza del potere.
