This book deals with four stories about men and women from the 1600s to our days. Every story is set in different places, ranging from Florence to Turin. The main characters are the heirs of a Jewish family, a witch, an inventor, an actress, a young Austrian Countess and a revolutionary.

Nel libro sono raccontate quattro storie di uomini e donne a partire dal 1600 fino ad oggi. Il filo che lega le vicende l'una all'altra è costituito da un dipinto che passa di mano in mano e che, in un certo senso, scandisce la vita di ognuno. Ogni vicenda è ambientata in un luogo diverso da Firenze a Torino. Ne sono protagonisti gli eredi di una famiglia ebrea, una strega, un inventore, un'attrice, una contessina austriaca e un rivoluzionario.
